Norma Plummer, the veteran coach, believes she is leaving the Spar Proteas in a better place despite ending her second stint with the national netball team following a series defeat to England.
The highly regarded Australian tactician, who was rehired by Netball South Africa a year ago to lead the side in the Netball World Cup in Cape Town in July and August, led the team for the final time during South Africa’s Vitality Netball Series tour of England.
Plummer, 79, who led the Proteas to sixth place in the 2023 World Cup, has announced his retirement from the sport.
South Africa was defeated 2-1 in England. The Proteas fought hard, but the three-match series was decided in the final game on Sunday, which Plummer’s women lost 53-50 .
“I’ve had the privilege of working with the best group of players in this South African team,” said Plummer, who was a member of the Proteas for the first time.
“I have had the privilege of working with the best bunch of players in this South African team,” said Plummer, whose first stint with the Proteas was from 2015 to 2019.
“It’s unfortunate that we did not win the series, but I can assure you that we have created something, and I can only hope that the team grows from here.”
“I’d like to extend my best wishes to the team and thank them for a fantastic second stint.” The time has come for Netball South Africa and South African netball to grow.”
The Proteas lost the first game by three points (54-51) and won the second match by two points (61-59) in an extremely close series.
