Owen Da Gama: A Veteran Coach’s Candid Critique of PSL Clubs
Owen Da Gama, a well-traveled South African football coach, has recently made headlines with his candid remarks about the state of professional football in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
As a former Orlando Pirates coach and seasoned manager, Da Gama’s insights provide valuable perspective on the challenges faced by clubs and the need for a long-term vision.
Rejecting Offers: Not a Fly-by-Night
Da Gama, who has over 20 years of coaching experience in South Africa, revealed that he turned down offers from both PSL and National First Division (NFD) teams at the start of the 2023/24 season.
His reason? He didn’t share the vision of some of the clubs that approached him. In his own words:
“I spoke to a few teams at the beginning of the season, but once I understood their thinking, I just thought this is not the project I want to be part of.
I am not a fly-by-night. Football is a process, and while changes can be made, instant success is impossible.”1
Da Gama’s refusal to associate himself with shortsighted clubs highlights his commitment to sustainable development and professional standards.
He recognizes that success requires patience, planning, and a holistic approach.
The Bigger Picture: A Journey Through Coaching
Da Gama’s coaching journey began with the now-defunct Silver Stars in the 2000/01 season. Since then, he has managed various clubs, including TS Galaxy, Bloemfontein Celtic, and Highlands Park.
His tenure also extended to the national stage, where he coached Bafana Bafana and the under-23 national team.
Despite his impressive track record, Da Gama remains unattached since parting ways with Sekhukhune United in the 2021/22 PSL campaign.
However, he continues to enhance his coaching knowledge, staying up-to-date with football trends.
Da Gama’s affiliation with the Spanish Football Institute reflects his commitment to learning and evolving with the game:
“Spain has been dominating football since 2010, setting trends that coaches worldwide adopt. I wanted to upgrade myself and understand. You’re never too young or too old to learn.”2
Looking Ahead: Da Gama’s Next Move
As the 2024/25 season approaches, Da Gama remains hopeful about landing a coaching job.
His refusal to compromise on vision and professionalism sets him apart. While some clubs chase quick fixes, Da Gama seeks a professional setup where long-term growth takes precedence.
In the ever-evolving world of football, Owen Da Gama stands as a reminder that success is not fleeting—it’s a journey. His words resonate with aspiring coaches, players, and fans alike: “Football is a process.”
Owen Da Gama’s principled stance on club vision and sustainable development is commendable. His insights serve as a valuable lesson for the football community.
